End-of-life notice: Action Script

For many years, Action Script was the backbone for external event integration and resolution in xMatters. It was designed specifically to meet the unique requirements of xMatters software products and our customers.

Since we first debuted Action Script in the hazy mists of long ago, our products have evolved to meet the changing needs of our customers:

  • Workflows (nee "communication plans") have been introduced and refined to replace event domains and the Advanced Messaging feature.
  • Drag-and-drop form layouts have replaced the awkwardness of custom messaging panels.
  • An easy-to-use editor in the web user interface has rendered cumbersome voice interaction scripts obsolete.
  • The Integration Builder and the new Integration Directory have eliminated the clumsy IDE used to edit integration logic.

And in addition to all those changes, we've rolled out ultra-high capacity voice providers, introduced new fill count features, added new options for voicemail handling, and completely overhauled event and notification job control.

In short, our enhancements and improvements have made the moldy, antiquated Action Script something of a dinosaur. It simply doesn't fit into the On-Demand architecture or our big, bold plans for the future. So it's time to say goodbye.

What does this mean?

For the vast majority of our clients, particularly recent on-boarders and any customers who have been using On-Demand since they signed up, this change will not have any effect whatsoever.

For some longer-term On-Demand clients, who are using older integrations, there may be some process or configuration changes required to keep their integrations working.

How do I know if I need to make changes?

We have already identified the clients impacted by this process, and we are reaching out individually to let them know what is required, and to guide them through the process.

What will the changes entail?

We will work with your team and our consulting organization to find a time to update any old, event-domain-based integrations to use workflows and the new REST API. The exact process required will vary between clients, but we have created a knowledge base article prepared by our customer support team that outlines the basic process and provides more technical details.

When is this happening?

We're planning to officially end all support for Action Script by March 31, 2018. We'll be working hard to make sure that our clients are fully prepared and updated well before then, though.

We will also be disabling access to some unused, legacy event domains during this period as we confirm they are not being used by any customers for their production systems.

Also, as of October 5, 2017, we'll be removing the ability to create new event domains in xMatters. This means that you will no longer be able to install legacy integrations that rely on Action Script and event domains. (Existing integrations will continue to work until March 31, 2018.)
