Changing the IP address of a server running xMatters

In some cases, it can become necessary to change the IP address of the server running xMatters. This article describes how to change the IP address, with separate instructions for an all-in-one deployment.

To change the IP address of a distributed (i.e., not all-in-one) xMatters deployment:

  1. Change the primary server address in the AlarmPoint Java Client or xMatters integration agent to point to the new IP address.
  2. Log in to the web user interface as the root user (i.e., as a Super Administrator).
  3. Click the Admin tab, and then click the Nodes and Device Engines menu item.
  4. Click the node name, and then specify new IP address in the the Host field.
  5. Save the change and then restart the node.

Instructions for all-in-one deployments

If you are running Microsoft SQL Express on the same server as the xMatters application, then changing the server IP address will also change the IP address of the database. As a result, while the web user interface login page will display, you will receive a login error indicating that the database is unavailable.

To change the IP address of an all-in-one deployment:

  1. From a command line, navigate to the xMatters installation directory (default is C:\Program Files\AlarmPointSystems\AlarmPoint).
  2. Run the following command:
C:> apsecure decrypt ./common/common.properties common.txt
  1. To open the decrypted file in Notepad, run the following command:
C:> notepad common.txt
  1. Locate the line that includes the value for JDBC_URL and specify the new IP address, similar to the following (where 127.0.0.1 represents the new IP address of your server):
#Wed May 14 14:13:37 PDT 2008
JDBC_DRIVER_CLASS_NAME=net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver
JDBC_USERNAME=ALARMPOINT3
JDBC_URL=jdbc\:jtds\:sqlserver\://127.0.0.1\:1433
JDBC_PASSWORD=point3alarm
  1. Save the file, and then navigate to the common directory.
  2. Rename the common.properties file to common.old.
  3. Navigate to the installation directory, and then run the following command:
C:> apsecure encrypt ./common.txt ./common/common.properties
  1. Restart the xMatters web server from the Services panel.
  2. Click the Admin tab, and then click the Nodes and Device Engines menu item.
  3. Click the node name, and then specify new IP address in the the Host field.
  4. Save the change and then restart the node.
