Voice messages read large numbers as a whole rather than individual digits

Question

In a voice message, we want certain large numbers (for example, an Incident ID or ticket number) to be read out. How can we achieve this?

Environment

  • All versions of xMatters

Answer

In the form's Voice Interaction message template, you can tell the system to use a TTS (text-to-speech) engine to read or spell out the phrase one letter or number at a time.

  1. In the Messages section of the form, next to Voice Interaction click Edit.

  2. Click the drop-down menu next to the relevant property.

  3. Select Spell Out.

  4. Once you're happy, click Save Changes.

Note:

  • The text-to-speech limit for each voice interaction text field is 100 characters. This limit cannot be increased through settings or by contacting support.

  • If the content you want read aloud is longer than 100 characters, split it across multiple text-to-speech fields so each segment stays within the limit.

  • Where possible, link alert properties (such as the alert message or other properties that contain data) into the voice interaction instead of typing long static text. Linking properties is especially helpful when the content isn't static and can also reduce how often you need to split text manually.
