3G Mobile Network Shutdown in the US

Question

All mobile carriers and providers in the United States will be shutting down their 3G networks in 2022; will this affect my xMatters notifications?

Environment

  • All versions of xMatters
  • Users with 3G devices

Answer

This will only affect users with 3G-only devices. If your device is 4G-enabled, you will continue to receive notifications and voice calls without interruption.

If you are still on a 3G device after the carriers shut down their 3G service, you will no longer be able to receive SMS messages or voice calls — from anyone, not just xMatters! You will need to upgrade your device to a 4G compliant version to receive notifications of any kind.

The major carriers intend to shutdown 3G on the following dates:

  • AT&T: February 2022
  • Sprint: March 31, 2022
  • T-Mobile: July 1, 2022
  • Verizon: December 31, 2022

AT&T has also released a handy guide that includes instructions on how to check if your device is 3G or 4G and a list of affected devices.
