Vanguard Development Highlights & Support Notes

We're hard at work on our next quarterly release, Vanguard, which will be rolling out in the March/April 2024 time frame.

Please follow this article and its comments to receive updates throughout the quarter about new features and functionality that we're working on for the Vanguard release. We'll also use this document to capture highlights of additions and updates to our mobile platforms and the xMatters REST API.

For a list of changes made in each deployment that aren't covered in the Development Highlights, see the support notes included below each highlight. While most features will be added to production environments as part of our quarterly releases, the support notes typically describe fixes, which can sometimes affect product behavior.

Release schedule

Here are the dates we're expecting the release to be available:

  • Non-production environment access: Tuesday, March 26, 2024
  • Production environment access: Tuesday, April 23, 2024
Customers interested in previewing new features before they're released can opt into our Early Access Program (EAP), which delivers new features into non-production environments as they're rolled off the assembly line.

Vanguard Production Release tomorrow!

Just a reminder that we're enabling the Vanguard Release in production environments tomorrow, Tuesday April 23 at 10:00 am Pacific! If you can't wait, we already have some exciting features in EAP, such as the 'ServiceNow Update Record' step, a redesigned Holidays experience, on-call reminders for the web user interface, and incident properties available in the 'Get Incident' step.

The Vanguard Release Overview is now available! It's your detailed map to all the powerful new features and enhancements packed into this release. Vanguard is currently live in non-production environments, and we'll be toggling features 'on' in production environments on Tuesday, April 23.

Incident Console updates

We've made some extremely helpful usability updates to the Incident Console:

  • Inactive users and groups are now clearly indicated in the resolvers section so you can tell if someone's departure has left a vital role unfilled.
  • Impacted services are now sorted by type, tier, and impact severity so you can quickly assess which of your services needs the most attention.
  • Timeline entries for tasks now include whether they were added as part of a task list and, if so, which task list they were a part of so you can easily see how and why a task was added.
  • The Timeline also now indicates when a task is overdue so you have a record of any milestones you may have missed in the resolution process.

Add a task to an incident in Flow Designer

The Add Task to Incident step, now available in Flow Designer, allows you to automatically add a task to an incident at any point in your resolution process so you can assist teams at every stage. Status, due date, and assignee information allow resolvers to keep track of what needs to be done during the incident.

You can use outputs from other steps to populate the fields, specify when the task should be completed, and add it to the Incident Console for other resolvers to see. 

More incident resolution goodies

In our ongoing quest to further refine your incident resolution process, we've also made the following updates:

  • Sort task lists by due date: Enhance your ability to create comprehensive lists of tasks to be completed during different incident types or use cases by sorting them using the 'Due Date' column as you're building them out. This can help you clearly see the order resolution teams need to tackle the tasks and to determine whether anything is missing.
  • Incident properties in Post-Incident Reports: You can now view and edit the values of incident properties during a postmortem for a more thorough analysis and understanding of the incident.

Auto refresh the Incidents list (or not!)

The Incidents list now includes an Auto Refresh option. This is useful if you're displaying the list on a screen—such as in a operations center—and you want to see the most recent incidents without having to manually refresh the list. You might also find it useful to disable this option if you're scrolling to look at older incidents so you're not taken back to the top of the list each time it refreshes.

About the early access delivery process

Customers can choose to opt their non-production environments into an Early Access Program (EAP) to see new functionality before it's released. If you're considering signing up for the early access program, there are a couple of important things to know:

  • Enrollment in EAP can be turned on any time through a support request.
  • Exiting EAP can only be done on quarterly boundaries (you cannot opt in and out between quarterly releases).
