How to uninstall and reinstall the xMatters bot for Microsoft Teams

Question

How can I reset my xMatters bot for Microsoft Teams when I encounter problems?

Environment

All versions of xMatters using the xMatters bot for Microsoft Teams

Answer

To uninstall the bot:

  1. In Microsoft Teams, open a chat with the bot and use the "status" command to return a list of teams where the bot has been added as a user.
  2. Go to each team and remove the bot from the list of users.
  3. When you've finished removing the bot from each team, you can uninstall the bot using the normal Microsoft Teams bot removal process and then reinstall it.

Note: Uninstalling the bot does NOT remove the Microsoft Teams workflow from xMatters. Instead, the workflow is renamed, with the new name indicating the date when the bot was uninstalled. Installing the bot again will create a new workflow automatically, but you'll need to migrate any customizations you have made to the old workflow to the new workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Q: The bot is logged on with the credential of a user who has left our organization. How do we uninstall the bot without access to this user's account?
ACreate a support ticket with xMatters and ask for the user account to be removed from xMatters' Microsoft Teams bot database. After the record is removed, you'll be able to reinstall the bot.

Q: We deleted the user account from xMatters that is used by the Teams bot, and without that credential we can't disconnect the bot. What should we do?

Q: What if we can't remove the bot from a team because the team is private and the owner has left our organization?
A: Create a support ticket with xMatters and ask for the user account to be removed from xMatters' Microsoft Teams bot database. After the record is removed, you'll be able to reinstall the bot.

Q: Is there a way to back up my bot configuration before uninstalling the bot?
A: That isn't currently possible. When you reinstall the bot, you will be starting from scratch.

Q: I want to install the bot with a service account, so that the bot isn't linked to a user who might leave my organization. Is that possible?
A: This will work as long as the account exists in Teams and in xMatters. The xMatters account must have the developer or Rest Web Service User role.
