Inbox past messages deletion / expiration inquiry

Not Yet Reviewed

Hi team, I would like to know if there's a way to clear or delete the Inbox past messages in xMatters on demand? or do they have an expiration like 30 days to clear out? I was trying to find it on the documentation but having a hard time finding it.

Appreciate any help that will be provided.

  • Messages will clear from your inbox when the event terminates or is no longer targeting you. There are a number of ways that can happen:

    • Every eVern has a defined expiry with the default being 3hrs.
    • Responding with a response that had an End or Escalate action. All responses are definable as to what action they take in our Comm Plan designer.
    • Our Events report lets you terminate selected messages, or all messages in your view.

There are probably some other techniques, but these are the three I use. As such, you shouldn’t see old messages unless you Inbox filter is set to All. Make sure that is set to Active.

  • Hi Doug,

Thank you for the info! In the XOD mobile app Inbox, there are some users who don't like to see their past alerts if their Inbox filter is set to "All". Is there a way to delete those past alerts that were already terminated or will it get removed from the system after a limited number of days/months?

  • Not currently. However it isn't clear what the use case is... the users want to use the "All" view which shows older messages, but don't want to see the older messages. And it is a simple click to switch between the two views. Can you clarify where that behavior is missing their use case? Maybe there is something else here I am missing.

And FWIW: we don't literally delete messages because that doesn't align with InfoSec requirements. However that could be academic in that messages can be made invisible to users while still maintaining them in the system.

  • Hi Doug,

I believe it's because they (support people) are getting so much alerts on their mobile app that they are concerned about storage and performance and that their phone device might get affected so they like to know when will those old messages be cleared on the mobile app to free up space?

  • Ok, that is easy! We don't store the messages on the mobile app - they are rendered as you read them. So there shouldn't be any concern about storage.

    Anything other concerns?
