HowTo Guide for Virtual Devices

Not Yet Reviewed

I'm preparing for an Alarmpoint 4.1 to 5.1 upgrade, and am "going through the motions" on a Virtual Machine to test the process.

However, I need to be able to use the Virtual Devices to test the output of the process (the VM has no real phone lines)

I can't find any documentation on how to actually use the virtual devices - just this page that suggests they exist...

https://help.xmatters.com/ondemand/content/installadmin/systemconfiguration/deviceengines/de_virtual.htm

Can anyone shed any light on how to use them...

  • Hi Tom

The inclusion of "Virtual Devices" in the On-Demand help is a mistake on our part, I'm afraid. We don't support them in On-Demand (and we'll be yanking that page from the help shortly.)

They do exist in 5.1, and can be set up and enabled the same way you would add or enable any device. If you're running xMatters on a Windows deployment, however, you'll need to run the node from the command line as the virtual devices don't play well with the Windows 2008+ desk top.

  • Hey Tom. Wow... we used to have several articles on these things but I can't seem to find them... I think they might have been lost in the shuffle to this new forum.
The install/admin guide has a little more information... and by a little I mean a whole paragraph...

So, pulling from memory... there is a component you need to install when running the installer. Note that voice is only supported on Windows, not *nix. Also note that because the device requires the use of the speakers, you can't use remote desktop to get into the machine. There were rumors of getting this working through remote desktop, but I've never had success with it.

If that hasn't scared you off, then all you need is to create a Virtual Device engine on one of your nodes and make sure it starts ok. Then create a new Virtual Device for a user, you might need to enable the virtual device types in the Admin tab > Device Types section. THEN, fire off a notification targeting your user and the virtual phone should pop up and start ringing or playing.
I think that's about it. I'll poke one of the support guys and see if he has any additional details.

    Happy Thursday,
    --- Travis
